Autism and Expressive Communication

Autism is defined as a complex disorder of brain development. Individuals diagnosed with autism have difficulty in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Having difficulty in expressive communication creates many challenges that students with autism face everyday. How would you feel if you weren't able to convey what you wanted through communication? You would obviously feel very frustrated. That is what autistic children feel everyday. However, with assistive technology we can help autistic children express their needs and wants! Expressive communication involves sending a message to another person to either make something happen or stop something that is already happening. Some teaching strategies that are used for expressive language are: pausing (let the student have time to process and respond) and having choices (let the student use a picture board).
